There are some really fine walks and beautiful wilderness scenery just a short drive south of Elm Wood. We suggest that you start the journey by taking the C502 sealed road from Exton (6 minutes west of Westbury) south to Golden Valley, and then follow the A5 (Lake Highway) up around Quamby Bluff to the turn off to Liffey Falls. The road is then very narrow and care needs to be taken. Allow an hour for the walk to the base of the main falls and back. You will not be disappointed, especially if you are there on a sunny morning. At the upper car park, be sure to check out the ‘Big Tree’ before returning to the A5.
Further
up the Lake Hwy is Pine Lake. Only a short drive on a very good road
and well worth the trip. Now on your return down the A5 you may choose to
take the track up Quamby Bluff for a great view from the top.
Still feeling athletic, then continue toward Deloraine and take the spur road back to Meander, a picturesque village on the south side of Quamby Bluff. Continue through the town past the new Meander Dam (or take some time to travel around the shores of this lake and then move on to the Meander Falls and Split Rock Falls. The area is remote and quite magnificent - pure Tasmania! We have an excellent DVD of the walks in this area for sale.
