West Walks and Day Trips

Tasmanian Wilderness

Deloraine and Mole Creek are excellent locations as a base to explore the Great Western Tiers around Lake Rowallan.  The Mole Creek area is studded with limestone caves.  The road through Mole Creek is an alternative route to Cradle Mountain and the West Coast.  Driving west from Mole Creek brings you to The Walls of Jerusalem National Park, Arm River Track, Lee's Paddocks, Lake McKenzie and Devil's Gullet as well as the Lemonthyme Valley. Check these tracks out at www.touringtasmania.info

In Deloraine do visit the Tourism Information Centre to wander through the museum, an early pub and attached home. Outside there are recreations of laundries, a trapper’sDeloraine tapestries in silk hut and drays.

Adjacent to the information booth you can see and learn about the beautiful tapestries in silk, made locally to illustrate the seasons in and around Deloraine.

Travel down the first road west of Deloraine on a weekday to Australia’s finest charcuterie (BF Products) and then continue on a short distance to 41 degrees South to taste hot-smoked salmon and ginseng, all produced on the propertyFabulous produce.

Back on the road to Mole Creek you will reach the Honey Farm at Chudleigh where you can taste 50 different honeys, buy a honey ice cream and observe a small colony of working bees.

Honey Farm at ChudleighThe track to Lobster Falls offers a very pleasant 45 minute to an hour’s walk and commences a few kilometres east of Chudleigh, home of the Honey Farm Store. Many hikers agree that this is another one of Tasmania's great short walks.

Another remarkable walk starts just east of Mole Creek , the short walk to Alum Cliffs – be sure to see this for the sheer surprise when you mount to viewing platform!

Just out of Mole Creek, turn at Don Road and visit the beautiful Wychwood garden on 3 acres of sloping land. A very fine garden indeed!

Mole Creek limestone cavesA few kilometres further out and you have a choice of a wet or a dry limestone cave. Allow an hour for the guided tour of the Marakoopa cave (and see the glow worms) or King Solomon’s cave. Both caves are quite spectacular.

The Walls of Jerusalem National Park, west from Mole Creek on C138, then south on C171, is regarded by many visitors to the wilderness areas as the jewel in the crown of Tasmania's national parks.  Although relatively small the park is exceptionally beautiful, particularly during summer with a mass of wildflowers in full bloom.  The most popular walk is the one to the "Central Walls" from next to the Fish River by Lake Rowallan. It is best to go well prepared with sleeping bag and rain-proof gear. You may want to spend several days walking in this area.
