Set on the village green of historic Westbury and surrounded by 100-year-old European trees and hedges, Elm Wood is more like a home you return to than a bed and breakfast. With three suites in the Gothic-gabled Elm House, and the even more private Linden Cottage in the garden, this is an oasis of peace and tranquillity in what is already a very beautiful place.

Hosts Gil and Diana Stokes go to extraordinary lengths to make guests comfortable. The rooms all have king-size beds, fluffy bathrobes and elegant period furnishings, and there's the choice between the luxurious Oak Suite, with its separate drawing room and spa-equipped bathroom, or the Walnut and Chestnut Sunrise Suites upstairs. Along with the cottage, the names of each have special meaning taken from the trees nearby, which filter dappled sunlight from dawn until dusk.

Breakfast is a special occasion and may include King Island yoghurt, croissants or bread made in a wood-fired oven using a recipe with walnuts picked only metres away. Yum.
